"No commitment" is one of the most sought-after promises when choosing an internet subscription. It is also one of the least well explained. The good news: in Belgium, the freedom to leave is not a commercial privilege reserved for a handful of packages — it is the common legal framework. What remains is knowing where something can still hold you back.

"No commitment": in Belgium that is already the rule

Since the 2022 telecom reform, a residential subscriber can end an internet, TV or mobile subscription at any time, with no early-termination charge. Not after six months, not on the contract's anniversary: at any time.

In other words, the question "is this offer commitment-free?" has, for the subscription itself, almost always the same answer: yes. What separates offers from one another is therefore not your right to leave, but what you leave behind when you do.

Add a second, equally reassuring mechanism: Easy Switch. When you change provider you cancel nothing yourself — your new provider does it for you, the dates line up, and you never pay for two subscriptions at once. Our page on cancelling sets out both situations step by step.

One nuance is worth noting: business contracts follow their own terms, which can differ from this residential framework. If you are unsure about your own situation, an advisor will go through it with you.

So why do offers still say "12 months" or "24 months"?

Because a duration shown in an offer almost never refers to the length of your contract. In the vast majority of cases it refers to the length of the benefit: a monthly discount valid for twelve months, a free month, an option included for a year.

That distinction is fundamental, and it works in your favour: a twelve-month promotion does not lock you in for twelve months. It simply tells you when the price will go back up. That is a date for your calendar, not a door closing.

The real trap, then, is not commitment — it is forgetting. Many households are still paying the full rate two or three years after the end of a discount they no longer remember.

The habit that changes everything: always compare over twelve months, promotional period and full price together. Two offers advertised at the same starting price can end up hundreds of euros apart over a year, purely because one returns to the full rate after three months and the other after twelve. That is the only calculation that truly decides.

What genuinely ties you down — and it is very little

Only three things can outlive your departure. Knowing them is enough to leave with peace of mind.

Nothing else. No hidden fees, no exit penalty on the subscription itself.

The four questions to ask before signing

Four questions are enough to know exactly what you are getting into:

  1. How long does the discount last, and what will the price be afterwards?
  2. Is a financed device included, and over how many instalments?
  3. Are installation or activation fees waived unconditionally?
  4. What equipment will I have to return, and where?

A serious advisor answers all four in two minutes. At Speed.be it is, in fact, the first thing we check with you.

Real freedom is being able to compare

Because leaving is free, the real work shifts: it is no longer about protecting yourself from a contract, but about choosing the right offer at the right moment — and coming back to check it once a year.

That is exactly what our comparison tool does: it ranks the offers available at your address by real twelve-month cost, promotional period and full price combined. The freedom the law gives you is only worth something once you know where to go.

And if you would rather someone did that work for you, an advisor does it free of charge.

Free to leave, free to choose better.

An advisor compares the entire Belgian market at your address, checks the terms line by line and tells you in two minutes what you stand to gain. Free, no commitment.
