« When is the Freebox coming to Belgium? » It's one of the questions we get asked most. The short answer: it probably isn't coming — and above all, you don't need it to pay a fair price for your internet. Here's why, and what to look at instead.
The Freebox is the box of Free (Iliad group), a French provider. Free doesn't operate a fixed network in Belgium and doesn't sell its offers there: the Freebox is therefore unavailable on the Belgian side, and will stay that way as long as Free neither rolls out nor buys a network here. The Belgian market has its own structure — cable networks (VOO, Telenet), copper and fibre (Proximus), and new entrants — with its own pricing rules.
What captures the imagination is mainly the image of a cheap « everything unlimited » plan. In reality, the gap with Belgium has less to do with the magic of a box than with competition and the structure of the French market. The good news: since the arrival of new players and the reform that makes cancellation free at any time, Belgian prices are finally moving — provided you compare and don't stay stuck on an old contract.
Rather than waiting for a box that won't come, look at what already exists:
The right instinct isn't to look for « the best brand », but the best offer actually available at your address, ranked by real cost over twelve months — that's what our comparison tool does.
Three principles are enough: compare over twelve months (not on the first month's price), check the actual availability at your address, and switch without fear thanks to Easy Switch (see our guide to switching provider). In Belgium you'll often get value for money that has nothing to envy the famous box next door.
No Freebox, but often better: an advisor compares the entire Belgian market and finds you the best price. Free of charge.
